Marva Wallace became
the first woman to be released under the provisions of the new law regarding battered women's syndrome. It's about time something's
being done about it! It took hundreds of years!

Wallace became the first prisoner released under the recently enacted habeas law, 1473.5 which enables battered women in California
state prisons to seek retrials or reduced sentences if they were convicted prior to 1992. Davis had vetoed Wallace's parole
two weeks before, but the courts ruled that she should be free after seventeen years in prison. Just before Christmas, survivor
Susan Deering was released after twenty-two years with the help of the habeas project which offers legal assistance to survivors
